We always thought we were very law-abiding citizens. However, we have had 3 'brushes' with law enforcement officers since being here - at least, Carol has!
1) On arrival at Auckland airport a sniffer dog (the one you see on Passport Control on the TV) sniffed Carol out! She was asked if she had fruit in her daysack but it turned out that the dog could smell bananas and pawpaws we'd had in the bag while on Rarotonga. The dog was rewarded for its good work!
2) On our second night in New Zealand at the Auckland City youth hostel Carol found a discarded wallet in the loo. She handed it in - all good. Later in the same loo in the waste bin she found a second discarded wallet, and again handed it in. Later on still, in the same loo (waste basket) she found 2 discarded travel wallets with passports. This time she made Jon accompany her to reception! By now the police had arrived and the items belonged to 2 Israeli girls who'd only been in the country 5 hours. They'd left stuff in their room (unlocked) while going for a shower. The police took all Carol's details and thanked her rather than thinking she was the guilty one! They were relieved that passports had been found.
3) We drove north to Whangamata to spend New Year with friends and on the way while Carol was driving the hire car, lo and behold she was stopped and breathalysed! The police were on a huge clampdown for New Year. Whangamata is New Zealand's equivalent of Newquay and drinking in public places is completely forbidden so the police were being super cautious. However, rather than blowing in to a tube all Carol had to do was count to 10 into a microphone! Luckily this showed NO ALCOHOL. All she'd had was a cup of tea with lunch.
Here are pictures from our stay in Whangamata:
